One of Karl Konig’s drawings

As you may know, Dr. Karl Konig was the founder of the worldwide Camphill movement. Camphill Ontario in Angus is part of this movement. They see their mission as creating wholeness for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This includes cultivating healthy lifestyles, meaningful work and a community experience. RSCC Foundation Studies in Anthroposophy students typically go to Camphill for a visit during their program.

The soul calendar drawings that will be exhibited at this conference in November were created during World War II when Karl Konig was interned on the Isle of Man in England. We realize that this conference conflicts date-wise with with the RSCC’s Waldorf Development Conference, but there will be an opportunity for Development Conference participants to take part in at least the Sunday part of the conference on Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul and Karl Konig’s Drawings. Details to be announced.

Keynote speaker for the conference will be Richard Steel

Richard Steel studied Linguistics, and then completed a training at the Camphill Seminar for Curative Education in 1975. He lived and worked with his family in a Camphill community for children and youngsters with special needs in Germany until 2008. Since then, he has been in charge of Karl König’s literary estate and founded the Karl König Institute.

Richard is a speaker and poet, and is responsible for the new edition of Karl König’s written works. He has been involved in establishing a Camphill life-sharing community with elderly people in New York State. He is managing director of the Karl König Institute and runs its office in Kleinmachnow near Berlin.

The coming first weekend in November brings a very special experience at Hesperus Fellowship Village, north Toronto, Ontario. At this weekend conference the 52 drawings made by Karl Koenig and 13 additional drawings will be on show in their entirety. This creates a special opportunity to experience the Soul Calendar verses through Karl König’s original drawings and lectures by Richard Steel. Each verse in the Calendar is part of a group of four corresponding verses. There are, thus, thirteen groups of corresponding verses or crosses. Karl König was one of the first, if not the first, researcher to study and elaborate the importance of these cross correspondences.

The conference program will include four public lectures by Richard Steel of the Karl Koenig Institute, small group (12-15 participants) sessions with Richard leading us through the 52 drawings. To keep these groups small and intimate there will also be groups for painting, eurythmy and creative writing. Over the Saturday these groups will move round so that everyone has an opportunity to be
in Richard’s group.

On the Saturday evening there will be an artistic presentations of eurythmy from the Montreal, Interval Group, local eurythmists and local musicians with the support of the Rudolf Steiner College Canada. Some members will already had the pleasure of seeing this exhibition at the AGM held in the West on Vancouver Island in May/June. This is another opportunity to view the exhibition on its World Tour in the centre and east of Canada. To whet your appetite here are a few quotes on the exhibition from Corinna Sons from the June eNews:

“Richard’s talk and the viewing of the exhibition have deepened my relationship with the Calendar of the Soul and sparked my interest in new explorations in this realm. Many thanks to him and the organizers!”

“König had immersed himself deeply into the verses of the Calendar of the Soul which are not to be understood as a linear sequence but rather as a living organism where the verse of the week is intimately related to three other verses. König called this constellation of four interconnected verses a “cross”. This four-foldness reflects the working of the four archangels who are continuously present
in the surroundings of the Earth.” We warmly invite you to join us.

“The Soul Calendar can indeed be seen as a path of initiation that leads into the planetary sphere and thence to the sphere where the etheric Christ lives.” Karl König, Advent 1947
