We are sad to announce that Jan Ney Patterson, RSCC Director of Early Childhood Education, has submitted her intention to retire as of June 3, 2022. At the same time we are also happy that she will begin a well-deserved retirement while at the same time finding ways to further support the EC movement.

Jan has worked in Waldorf education for more than 45 years. She completed her Foundation Studies in Anthroposophy at Emerson College, Forest Row UK, in 1976 and her Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education training with Margret Meyerkort, at Wynstones School, Gloucester UK, in 1978. She has taught in Waldorf kindergartens for over 17 years in the UK, USA, and Canada.

During her 21 years of service at RSCC, Jan has contributed so much in so many ways. In September 2001 we joyfully welcomed her as our first full-time administrator. The following year she shadowed Dorothy Olsen during the early childhood block in the full-time program before assuming responsibility for the early childhood focus after Dorothy’s retirement.

In 2009 with the new title of Director of Early Childhood Teacher Education, Jan founded the part-time early childhood program for currently practicing teachers while also building the early childhood full-time training. Since then she has created our WECAN-recognized Birth-to-Three program.

Most recently she applied for and received approval for our full-time early childhood program to be recognized as vocational training under the Private Career Colleges Act. Jan continues to be a mentor and consultant to Waldorf schools far and wide.

A hiring committee has been set up and a job posting will be issued shortly to find her successor. We hope to have a new director in place by April so that Jan can coach them before she leaves. The part-time and full-time early childhood programs will carry on under the new director.

We look forward to a celebration of Jan’s many achievements. Please stay tuned for the date and further details.

RSCC Executive Director
